Fittest is relative though - if you scaled all animals up to the same size and weight, you'd get your ass kicked by an ant

Fittest isn't really about physical condition, you know. It's not "fit" as in "in good shape", it's more like "suited to a purpose". The purpose being to survive in a certain environment. Size is part of the "being suited", you don't see a lot of elephant-sized things in a cave, for example.
And depending on what kind of ant, we could get our but kicked anyway. Plus, there's more of them then there are of us.
